Imagine that an individual was born on 23rd August 1991 at 15:12 UT. At this very precise hour, the Sun is at 29° 59′ 59″ of Leo. A certain simplifying astrology will then say of him that he is audacious, radiant, superb and generous, greedy for glory and ambitious, all qualities classically attributed to the sign of Leo. Now imagine that he was born four minutes later, at 15:16 UT. This time, the Sun is at 00° 00′ 01″ of Virgo. We will then make him the portrait of a shy, modest, reserved, withdrawn, anxious and meticulous being.
In fact, a fraction of a second is enough to pass from one Sign to another, to transform a bold lion in Cautious Virgo. On 23rd August, the Sun entered the sign of Virgo at 15:14 UT. One second before, we are Leo. A second later, we are Virgo. Apparently, this seems absurd… and it is indeed, all the more so since the times of birth are rarely absolutely exact, and in any case they never mention the seconds. And think of the poor individual who was born exactly at 15:14 UT: the Sun is then exactly at the limit of Leo and Virgo. If we consider that he is 30° from Leo, he is Leo; if we consider that it is at 0° of Virgo, it is Virgo. He is neither Leo nor Virgo. Will he be plagued all his life by a terrible identity crisis?
Of course not. The zodiac is a cycle that is divided into twelve phases called Signs. As we have seen above, this division into twelve is legitimate and realistic: the axes of the equinoxes and the solstices divide it into four quadrants (which correspond for the Sun to the four seasons), the latter being themselves divided into three Signs (one close to an equinox, the other to a solstice, the last being intermediate). Between Pisces and Aries, Gemini and Cancer, Virgo and Libra, Sagittarius and Capricorn, the borders are clear (example: when the Sun is at 0° Cancer, it goes from growth (vivid reactions) to decrease (slow reactions) diurnal.
Just before the precise moment of the summer solstice, the days increase; immediately afterwards, they decrease: it is no longer the same dynamic. The borders between the other Signs are more blurred. Nothing formally allows us to affirm that each Sign is exactly 30° in extent. To return to our first example, from Leo to Virgo, Signs of Summer, we are still in dominant and increasing diurnal durations. Leo and Virgo have one thing in common.
That said, how to interpret the chart of an individual born exactly at 15:14 UT on 23rd August 1991? By simplifying and without taking into account the other elements of his natal Chart, we can say that by ensuring the passage between Leo and Virgo, he is a daring person who knows how to be cautious, an ambitious person who knows his limits, a generous but not prodigal…
